Education Targets
The Program aims to cultivate senior professionals and engineers in the fields of fashion design, clothing pattern and technology, application of clothing digitalization, clothing material, and functional and protective clothing development. It also aims to cultivate senior management professionals in the fields of fashion industrial economy, fashion marketing, brand operation, commodity inspection, logistics and trade, etc.
Specialized Knowledge And Ability
Fashion Design and Engineering Program is special in that it is not only the crossover of engineering technology and art design, but also the combination of fashion discipline and other engineering disciplines. It is the earliest in China to build the fashion discipline and has established an education system of three levels: bachelor, master, and doctor. Fashion Design and Engineering Discipline of Donghua University is accredited as the state Key Discipline of Fashion, the only one of its kind in China. Fashion Design and Engineering Program has ranked number 1 in China over the past years.
The Program has strong ties with the fashion institutes in Hong Kong and countries like US, UK, Japan, and Korea. At doctoral level, it has academic exchange with Universite de Haute Alsace of France; at master’s level, it signs co-education agreement with Iowa State University of US; for undergraduates, it has 1-year visiting student program with Fashion Institute of Technology of US.
Primary Subject
Fashion Design and Engineering Program emphasizes on the training of students’ practical ability through engineering practices such as material function and construction experiment, style design practice and patterning practice, garment techniques practice, etc. It has functional and protective clothing research center, clothing ergonomics research center and garment CAD/CAM research center. It also has fashion industrial production laboratory, garment fabrics testing laboratory, sewing laboratory, fashion digitalization laboratory, etc. It makes full use of social resources and strengthens cooperation of different levels with government, industry, and enterprises. It has built research and internship bases with adidas, Esprit, Youngor Group, Hailan Group and Mozhihua Group, etc.

2. Be a high school graduate under the age of 35
Requirements on Language Credentials
1. If you are applying for Chinese-taught Programs:
☑ HSK Certificate: HSK 5 above 180 received within the recent two years.
*For applicants of Chinese-taught programs, HSK certificate can be exempted if the entire high school curriculum was taught in Chinese. Instead, an official letter of Chinese-teaching proof with signatures or seals issued by the high school must be provided.
2. If you are applying for English-taught programs
☑ CIP: IELTS 6.0 or TOEFL IBT 80 or above received within the recent two years.
☑ SCF: IELTS 5.5 or TOEFL IBT 72 or above received within the recent two years.
* Native-English speakers do not need to provide the language certificate when applying for English-taught programs.
* IELTS or TOEFL certificates can be exempted if the entire high school curriculum was taught in English. Instead, an official letter of English-teaching proof with signatures or seals issued by the high school must be provided
Application Documents
☑ ID photo (uploaded online): recent bareheaded (within six months), full-face, white-color background, two-inch certificate photo, instead of landscape photos or photos of daily life; in JPG format, less than 100K.
☑ Passport Copy :
- A clear copy of your valid passport with your name, photo, birth date, place of birth, date of issue, date of expiry.
- Visa page is required for applicants who are not in their home countries.
☑ High school graduation certificate and transcripts of all grades: Copies of the original certificate with the high school stamp and/or the signature of the principal. If the originals are not in Chinese or English, they must be translated and notarized.
* For applicants who haven’t graduated, pending graduation certificate and transcripts available till the application date are also acceptable. Official graduation certificate and transcripts of all grades shall be submitted timely after being received.
☑ Personal Statement:
- Essay format written in English or Chinese on one page of A4 size paper. For applicants of English-taught programs (CIP, SCF), it must be written in English.
- Introducing why you are applying and what makes you suitable, including your interests and enthusiasm for the major; skills, experience or achievements gained from previous education, work or other activities; Why you choose to study in China instead of your own country, and why DHU.
☑ Language Credentials --- refer to the above mentioned Requirements on Language Credentials
☑ For applicants of art & design majors, it is required to submit art or design works strictly according to the following requirements:
-If you are applying for Chinese-taught majors (Fashion & Apparel Design, Product Design, Environmental Design, Visual Communication Design, Digital Media Art, Art & Technology): the original latest art works must be submitted with the other documents, including one pencil sketch, one color painting, one design rendering (for fashion related, it must be ladies’ wear or mens’ wear). All works must be in the size of 360mm*260mm.
-If you are applying for majors offered by SCF, please offer the Personal Creative Design Portfolio recorded in a CD disk. No limits on formats required but designs by hand are preferred. The works need to be shot by DV with your own oral English presentation of design concepts to reflect your understanding of professional knowledge, skills and creativity.
* Students who are admitted to art and design related majors will take a painting or design test before enrollment. If results are inconsistent with the works submitted for application, DHU reserves the right to withdraw the admission.
*Applicants who have submitted copies of certificates are required to take the originals for verification on the enrollment day. If the copies submitted are inconsistent with the originals, DHU reserves the right to withdraw the admission.
*Insurance: RMB 800/year
The insurance, medical exam fee and visa application fee are charged by PingAn Insurance Company, designated hospital and Shanghai Entry-Exit Administration Bureau respectively
*Chinese Visa Cost:
- Entrance Visa Application Fee: vary from country to country Medical Examination Fee in Shanghai: approx. RMB 500
- 4-year Study Visa Application Fee: RMB 1.200
*Other Living Costs (per month): This expense includes meals, laundry, local transportation, personal items, etc. This will vary from person to person.
- Meals on campus: approx. RMB 1.500
- Personal Expenses: approx. RMB 2.500
