XIAMEN UNIVERSITY

Xiamen University (XMU) , established in 1921 by renowned patriotic overseas Chinese leader Mr. Tan Kah Kee, is the first university founded by an overseas Chinese in the history of modern Chinese education. XMU has long been listed among China’s leading universities on the national "211 Project", "985 Project" and "Double First-class" initiative, which have been launched by the Chinese government to support selected universities in achieving world-class standing. Xiamen University Malaysia Campus is the first overseas branch campus established by a prestigious Chinese university.

With a graduate school, 6 academic divisions consisting of 28 schools and colleges, and 14 research institutes, XMU boasts a total enrollment of nearly 40,000 full-time students (including 1,500 international students), i.e. 20,000 undergraduates, 16,400 graduate students toward a master’s degree, 3,600 doctoral candidates.

XMU currently has a faculty of over 2,600 full-time teachers and researchers, of whom 22 are the members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences or of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (including 9 who are employed simultaneously by other institutions), and 44 professors are Distinguished or Chair Professors on the Changjiang Scholars' Program.

XMU has forged partnerships with 236 universities in such countries as the UK, the US, Japan, France, Russia, etc., as well as China’s special administrative regions like Hong Kong and Macao and the Province of Taiwan; it has established 16 Confucius Institutes in collaboration with local universities in 13 countries.

MOTTO

The motto of Xiamen University is: Pursue Excellence; Strive for Perfection.

The phrase "Pursue Excellence" can be traced back to the Book of Changes in which there is a sentence that goes "As the movement of the heavens is forever dynamic, so the superior man pursues excellence all his life." The phrase "Strive for Perfection" is taken from the chapter of Great Learning in the Book of Rites in which great learning is defined as "the ability to explain and exemplify virtues, to show love and concern for people, and to strive for perfection."

CAMPUS

Siming Campus is located in Siming District, Xiamen, covering an area of 167 hectares. It mainly houses such academic divisions as the Humanities and Arts, Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Engineering and Techonlogy.

Zhangzhou Campus is located in Zhangzhou China Merchants Economic and Technological Development Zone (CMZD), Zhangzhou, covering an area of 171 hectares. It houses XMU Tan Kah Kee College, the Institute of Industrial Technology and other platforms for scientific and technological innovation.

Xiang’an Campus is located in Xiang’an District, Xiamen, covering an area of 243 hectares. It mainly houses such academic divisions as Medicine and Life Sciences, Earth Sciences and Technology, and newly emerging disciplines and applied disciplines. It also houses the Southern Base of Confucius Institute Headquarters and Institute of Confucius Institute Directors. 

EMBLEM

The four characters in the traditional Chinese writing form at the top stand for "Xiamen University" and at the bottom are the words of "Xiamen University" in Latin; the three stars inside the shield represent the "three powers" in the theory of traditional Chinese philosophy, namely the so-called three major elements in nature: spirit, universe and human beings; the city wall and gate in the center of the shield symbolize that XMU attaches great importance to attracting top talents from all over the world and implementing open education; the four Chinese characters in the ribbon mean "striving for perfection", which is the original motto of XMU.

XIAMEN UNIVERSITY

ON CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION

-All new students of the following schools and colleges will reside on Xiang’an campus: School of Electronic Science and Engineering, School of Informatics, School of Aerospace Engineering, School of Life Sciences, College of Ocean and Earth Sciences, College of the Environment and Ecology, School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, School of Public Health, and College of Energy. New students of all other schools and colleges will reside on Siming campus.

-Due to the limited availability of on-campus accommodation, priority will be given to students who are recipients of scholarships that include subsidies for on-campus accommodation. Any surplus accommodation will be allotted to students who are recipients of scholarships with no subsidies for accommodation and to self-funded students.

-International students on Siming campus who receive no subsidies for accommodation should apply for on-campus accommodation every academic year, which means that their on-campus accommodation will expire at the end of the current academic year and should reapply for on-campus accommodation for the next academic year. All international students on Xiang’an campus should apply for on-campus accommodation every academic year, which means that their on-campus accommodation will expire at the end of the current academic year and should reapply for on-campus accommodation for the next academic year.

-Recipients of Chinese Government Scholarships or Confucius Institute Scholarships that cover on-campus accommodation expenses (excluding the Professional Development Program for Chinese Language Teachers in South Asian Countries for MTCSOL) can apply for an accommodation subsidy if they give up free on-campus accommodation and choose to live off campus.

OFF CAMPUS ACCOMMODATION

Students who fail to secure on-campus accommodation are expected to arrange for their own off-campus accommodation before their arrival. The monthly rental of an apartment room near the Siming campus is around RMB 2,500. 

INTERNATIONAL STUDENT APARTMENTS

-International student apartments are available on Siming and Xiang’an campuses. The apartments on Siming campus each have a twin room, while the apartments on Xiang’an campus are in suites, with each suite consisting of four twin rooms. Each room is equipped with beds, desks and chairs, wardrobes, an air conditioner, a water heater, a bathroom (suites have a different bathroom arrangement), and Internet access (for a fee). Communal self-service washers and dryers and other equipment are available.

-International students with on-campus accommodation are expected to pay for their water and electricity consumption.
